Which mattress is best for back pain?

Back Pain – Can a Mattress Help?

An old, unsuitable or poor quality mattress, as well as being generally uncomfortable to sleep on and negatively affecting the quality of the sleep you manage to get while lying on one, can have implications on your health and comfort during the rest of the day too.

When you consider that you spend around a third of your life in bed, it makes sense that doing so on a mattress that isn’t good for you might well cause back pain as well as robbing you of the restorative, good quality sleep essential to keeping you in optimum mental and physical condition.

What sort of mattress is right for me?

One of the main things to bear in mind when selecting a mattress is the fact that your spine has three distinct curves rather than being straight and the shape of these curves needs to be maintained and supported when you’re horizontal. Your mattress, therefore, needs to be firm enough to support you, but soft enough for comfort and to allow you to sink enough so that all parts of your back are supported and give you the best chance of avoiding back pain.

All mattresses aren’t created equal. Classic open sprung mattresses are the most economical and if well made can provide sufficient support and comfort for most people. Pocket sprung mattresses are a step up, with each metal spring being individually encapsulated and as such able to work independently of its neighbours, allowing for better support. Memory foam mattresses are the most ergonomic of the mattresses, able to contour exactly to the form of the sleeper.
